E-mail Print PDF
Domestic violence occurs in the Power and control tactics are exacerbated due to internalized and institutionalized homophobia and heterosexism.
  • Fear that law enforcement or the courts will have prejudices and misconceptions because of sexual orientation.
  • Partner threatens to ‘out’ you, your HIV or other medical status or others you care about in the community or at work.
  • Reporting or revealing abuse may cause friends/family to take sides, limiting vital social and community support, especially in a small or closeted community.
  • Abusing partner may threaten to expose you as LGBTTQ and get your children taken away.
  • Admitting that abuse happens in the LGBTTQQ communities may be denied or may be seen as a betrayal of the community itself – that revealing abuse may strengthen misconceptions and oppression of the LGBTTQQ communities.
  • Reporting sexual abuse within a LGBTTQQ relationship may be more embarrassing due to misconceptions and institutionalized homophobia heterosexism.
